Basic Essentials for Canoeing and Kayaking

The basics for the beginner is clothing that is going to keep you warm and dry. Depending on how cold/warm it is you can start with a base layer. It is essential to choose items that wick well and dry quickly. There are many types of thermals (wicking garments) on the market but some remain wet for a long time thus allowing the body to cool down.

Worn over this a good canoeing cagoule is essential. Canoeing cagoules differ from those used for walking etc as they do not have a zip down the front which would let the water in. There is a good selection available nowadays, anything from a basic cagoule with an elasticated waistband and elasticated cuffs to the full dry top with sealed seams, double waist to accommodate your spraydeck and neck and cuffs seals that do not allow the water in - most essential when paddling moving water. Teamed with this dry trousers can be obtained.

Some paddlers choose to wear a wetsuit, usually a long john type.

A good buoyancy aid specifically designed for canoeing is an absolute essential. Capsizes happen frequently and even the strongest swimmer can go into shock and need help of a buoyancy aid (PFD) to keep them afloat whilst coping with boat, paddles etc. They are designed with movement in mind and when fitted correctly will not cause rubbing or chaffing. Again there are many types available, either with zips at the front or pull over the head types. Those with zipped fronts are probably the most popular but the pull on types can often be a better fit.

Some type of watersports footwear is recommended as opposed to wearing trainers. If your kayak has footrests any laces can get wrapped round them and the paddler can become trapped and unable to get out in the case of a capsize.
